Using that business registry you can check on the address and contact details for the company. You can then send a brief email and ask them if they have been running a competition. Don't use any addresses or phone numbers that came with the emails/texts. It's always best to use independent sources of known trustworthiness such as a phone book to verify anything like this before proceeding. Also, google a phrase of the text and enclose it with inverted commas "" and usually if it's a hoax you'll see various hoax busting sites will be in the top places.
